Exciting because this may be the first time that you are taking this route and experience the amazing view and a little unsettling because at one point you could be doubting yourself if you are fit enough to go through this multi-day adventure. This is where training and preparation would come in. Here’s what you can do.
- Learn to pace yourself during the training. This is the key to a successful multi-day trip. Use your heart rate to accurately pace yourself.
- During your training, perfect fueling and hydration. Do not let yourself go hungry or thirsty. Finish the ride not feeling ravenous, only slightly hungry and do not let yourself have a sugar crash.
- If you can, try to book a training camp away from all the distractions. This is ideal so you can practice your routine. However, do not overdo yourself when you sign up for a training camp. You may end up getting ill and miss the multi-day bike ride.
- Train Consistently. When you go mountain biking, it requires endurance, strength and skill and this is something that you need to prepare for. Set up a training schedule depending on your skill and fitness level and build up from there. Supplements can help here to help your muscles recover faster. Commit to the number of hours and days that you can train and be consistent about it. If you are not at the level that you need to be, try to build your riding distance until you reach your goal.
- Do some test events. Sign up for a challenging sportive before your multi-day ride. Use this as a dry run or a gauge whether your hydration, fueling and pacing strategies are effective.
